In-tank fuel pump - old Super Duty

Working on the 63 CT-850 Super Duty fuel system.  When we got it, there was an after-market fuel pump installed between the fuel tank and the filter.  worked fine for several seasons.  Then the truck just quit this spring.  replaced the fuel pump, it ran fine.  Drove it 5 mi to gas stn, shut it off, topped of the tank, 5 gal or so, went 1.2 mi and died.  Fuel pump was hammering like and old Cummins Compact air compressor, took canister of the fuel pump [down stream from the pump], no flow,  No visible crud in the cansiter (new element at the last show last fall).  Gas tank is made of mild steel and still shiney inside. Turned the key off and on a few more time, fuel started to pump.  Put the cansiter back on and drive it 100 mi.  Ran great.  Same scenario at next stop.  Drained tank, nothing notable came out.  Refilled tank, would run ok one time, then act up the next time.  Now won't pump up fuel at all.

Where am I going with this play-by-play soap opera you ask?  This truck has a fire truck body that was oput on with no way to get to the top of the saddle tank without removing the tank, which requires cutting out the side panel of the body to get to the tank, and cutting the lower side of the tank straps where they are welded to the saddles.  Apparently it still has the factory original Tokheim in-tank submersible pump, through which the gas is being pumped by the aftermarket pump.  For some reason the flow is blocked.

Bottom line, does anyone know where to find a pump like these, Also has anyone had any experience with just removing the in-tank pump and intalling a suction tube and continue to use the aftermarket pump?  Thanks

I can't help but our 1963 T 850 had dual 80 gallon tanks.  One in tank fuel pump went out, we just used the one tank after that.  Some days we needed to refill during the day.  That had a 477 V 8.

Those "pulse type" fuel pumps are not up to the task, Either fix the Tolkhem or put a "race type" fuel pump on it.  I got a Fleetstar real cheap 'cause they couldn't keep it running... had a pulse type electric on it, I replaced the engine driven pump and it ran fine.

Any ideas on who sells the Tokheim, or similar pumps?  I started with NAPA, no listing by application.

Do you have enough access to the tank to by-pass the original pick-up and tap another bung, convert to Holley race type pump, ,,,mind the pressure at the carb.

That's way I'm leaning right now.  I talked to a place here in town that deals in gas tanks. The guy was familiar with this type of set-up.  He states these pumps are obsolete and no longer available anywhere (Sure enough I'll find one as soon as I modify the truck).

I am going to take the pump assy out and install a full-length standpipe in the flange, and reassemble. Will need to find something to use for a screen at the bottom of the standpipe to keep from sucking up "foreign objects" into the line or pump.

Still need to take the saddle off and get straps made, as these bolt at the top, welded at the bottom; have to cut them at the bottom to get the tank off, tank floor of the fire truck body sits 2" above the tank.  Will need to get new straps made to bolt at the bottom also.

Ford used that pump setup on all super duty engines up into the late seventies that pump may still be available from a ford medium truck dealer,those engines used a large capacity fuel pump,there is a strainer that is easily clogged at the bottom of pump body in bottom of tank.there is one of these pumps on ebay now for 75.00 item 190556421858,hope this helps.the borg-warner number is ep7294.if you type in ford truck fuel pumps ther are 3 or4 on there

There are Walbro and Aeromotive pumps out there that will probably work for upper end stuff.  There are carter rotary external pumps.  Probably easier to find a pump for a carbed application that is external to the tank.  Also get a pressure regulator to step the pressure down to 6PSI or so so you aren't over powering the floats.

Hey rconway, you're a better shopper than I am.  Thanks for the heads-up.  I missed that one completely last night.  Now all I gotta do is get out there in the heat and finish cutting the tank out of the fire truck body.
