These soldiers look like they are enjoying themselves, as well they should, deservedly so,  as we celebrate our independance. Photo from the Life Magazine Collection.

Bantam for sure. The first time I ever saw one of these was in a Laurel and Hardy movie. Thought it was the funniest looking Jeep I had ever seen.

There is perhaps no other vehicle that is more of an American original than the jeep. I can't think of a more appropriate "truck" to feature on July 4th. But this is not just any jeep, this is the very 1st "1/4 ton 4x4 truck" ever built, not a Willys, not a Ford, but the American Bantam pilot model which made it's first appearance in September 1940. What is really amazing is that this 1st Bantam 4x4 was produced in just 49 days, which included all of the design, engineering, manufacturing and assembly. The Bantam pilot model was such a success that Bantam received an order for 70 improved models, known as the Mark II. In the meantime, skeptical of Bantam's production capacity, the Army invited Willys and Ford to inspect the Bantam pilot model and even allowed them to make detailed drawings of it. By the time Willys and Ford delivered their prototypes, they bore an amazing resemblance to the Bantam. Imagine that ! Later in 1941 Bantam, Willys, and Ford were awarded contracts to build 1500 pre-production prototypes each to decide which company would be awarded the production contract for the 1/4 ton 4x4. Willys won this competition and produced the MB, the famous WW2 military jeep. Ford would later win a contract to built jeeps to the Willys design; these were known as the GPW. And poor Bantam, the designer of the 1st 1/4 ton 4x4 truck later known around the world as the jeep was left out in the cold. Ironically, Bantam would win a contract to build jeep trailers, but no more jeeps !

Jerry Park had this 1st. The 1st 2 photos below are from the Life Magazine Collection.

Although the original Bantam pilot model has not survived, an exact replica were recently built. Here is a link to a video of that Bantam.
