Question for GMC 9500 owners

It says its powered by the 6V71 but I thought the 9500 long nose all had the 8V71? Bought a GMC 9500 manual off ebay that might answer my question but it hasn't turned up yet.

dunno were ya see thats ittsa long nose model 9500 [which should beea MH model]

most conventional cab  9500;s aint long hoods ...and dont have 8v71;s[but the MH did]

 later[after 1967]  introduced fh model [afectionatly know as the 2 story corvair ] astro/titan models

....i only startin workin the ;;;heavy ; line atta GM dealer in 1971....so i gotta lotta ;;brain fade ;;

and ta answere an ongoin question [while on the jimmy subject]...

...there has always been an ongoin question as ta wheither GMC ever installed a v12[detroit] inna conventional cab truck [factory intsalled that is]

.....i .as well as anyone i know of. has ever seen one factory installed ....and no records that i have ever seen show that they did either

.....lottsa em were in the 2 story corvairs though..........nuttin unusualle there

David, The guide for the sale has it as a 1967 GMC 9500 Detroit inline diesel, 13 spd trans, hope this helps...........Bill

Bill, I believe that would be one of the first  of the long nose. Since it has a low mount cab like a J I don't know if it was called a MH or not. I bought a HI in 71 and I think that was the start of the H or high mount cab. We had a 69 J with a 8v71 and that was miserable to work on. had to unbolt the cab mounts and jack the cab up to remove the valve covers. I believe the original premise was to use the long hood to avoid this but length laws interfered so they raised the cab. my .02 worth. Wayne

Wayne, It is a low cab for sure, more than likely a good old truck. I like the tall cab better myself.

9500 GMC looks good. 1965 Ford 4X4 pickup looks good also 64,000+ miles. Wayne with the long nose why was engine set back so far? It must have had extended fan hub to cool radiator. Joe D.

Joe, I don't know as mine were all short hood and the motor was in the cab with you. Only reason we had them was they rode better than a cab-over at the time and they worked well on end dump. Also we had good dealer support for gmc and IH. Not much else back then around here cept a small Mack dealer. Wayne

The raised cab came in 1971 on the short hood (H and J) models with 8V-71's or Cummins NTC's and 903's.  The raised cab was used on the long hoods (M) in 1974 to fit a larger radiator with all engine options.

MH9500s and the other models with that cab came out for the 67 model year . Originally available with the 8V71 with a 113 or 115 BBC. The "M" series model with the 6-71 was a MI 9500 , both were originally available with a single [2 axle] configuration as well  .The low mount was continued through about 74-75 when GMC changed the cab mounts on the frame to raise the cab 4" to acomodate a taller radiator for higher HP engines like the 335 Cummins . At that time the grille was changed from the quad headlight with 6" lights mounted center [top to bottom] in the grille to the 2 headlight 7" grille . Also the fender wheel well openings were extended downward to compensate for the raised hood and cab .The raised cab models attached the hood hinges to a taller front bumper ,instead of to a tubular crossbar in front of the radiator like on low cab models .

I own a Chevy MH 90 ,1970 vintage low cab,and originally Chevy grilles and front steel hood section had 7" headlights centered in the grille opening .When GMC raised the Cab ,Chevy did as well ,and used the same common grille with the 7" headlights lowered to the bottom of the grille .
My 73 "Black Mariah" had a low cab ,but may have been in an accident ,as it had the 7" headlights low in the grille ,but the hood didn't have the extended fender openings . Steel hood sections and the cabs on this series are guaranteed to rust out . At one time the Jones Performance crew from Pennsylvania had fiberglass repair sections for the steel hood section . MH models were phased out in '76 as the Bison and General aluminum cab models came out for the '77 model year .

Hey all thanks for that, still waiting for my manuals off ebay to turn up that will hopefully answer some of my questions also.  There is also a really tidy 9500 long nose "low" on farm trader that is 318 powered.

M series had the long hood which was 113" BBC,J series was the short hood with 90-93" BBC depending on front bumper . JI had the 6-71,JH had the 8V71,JV had the 6V53,J something had the 3208 ,but other J series had the inline Cummins. On another thread in the past are pictures of an MH or maybe it was an MC[Cummins] that was repowered with a 3406 Cat by BDR from Vermont or New Hampshire . Long hoods had the full fender on the hood,short nose J series had the rear quarter of the fender on the bottom of the cab .
Joe ,where did you see an MH where the 8V71 had any distance behind the radiator ? The space is behind the engine...........Even with the flange mount compressor ,it all clears the floor with just a small flat plastic cover over the toe board for access to the transmission valves . GMC used their own design for a fan hub with a fixed height,not the typical DD fan hub,as they tightened the fan belts with the alternator swivel adjustment . Mine has only a 4 blade fan with not a lot of pitch  to keep it quiet . I've been looking at my Chev MH in the back yard for 20-25 years needing a cab.......Have 5 with all needing lots of work or modification . Local vocational school did a ton of mechanical work for me years ago by rebuilding the Stopmaster brakes ,swapping the front axle for one with brakes, swapping the RT 910 for an RTO 913 ,shortening the driveshaft, and rebuilding the 8V71T out of an Astro that I installed prior .

In the 2007 WOT calendar book, the supplement that has all the truck photo's there is a 1968 9500 long nose that is a tall cab. I thought the tall cabs didn't arrive until the 70's? The sooner my GMC 9500 books turn up in the mail, the better.

Tino-----I don't have that reference with me here in Tucson,but how are you identifying the "tall cab" ?
You can't see the brackets that support the cab ,and you can't measure the actual difference of the top of the cab above the frame . If I recall the dimensions listed in the sales manuals showed 58" for low cab v/s 62" for high cab . The high cab brackets for the MH are the same ones used for the JH ,I believe . Of course ,someone could install the later model hood with the wrap around wheel well opening on an earlier chassis ,[like I plan to do on my Chevy] . Or put low profile tubeless tires on the front to show a greater distance between the tire and fender edge . I guess I like the low mounts 'cause I'm old and can't climb the big steps !

All the high mount cabs have the cast front cab brackets/mounts and the low cabs have a stamped steel fabricated bracket.

I'm lucky enough that between the help of Dan Renovetz and Clayton Hoak I have pretty solid collection of GMC heavy truck brochures scanned onto my computer, from 1965 up, including the 9500 long hood prototype pics.Here is the 1970 brochure. On page two it shows the "NEW" raised cab short hood model, designed to accomodate big horsepower in the 92" BBC package. It would appear that the low mount 92" BBC was still standard with the high mount use being based on the engine option ordered rather than just being an across the board model change.The 114" BBC long hood was still a low mount in 1970. I'm also attatching the cover of the '73 brochure that shows a high mount 92" and low mount 114", with low mount 92"s shown inside, and the cover of the '74 brochure that shows high mounts across the board.I would say '74 was the year they decided it was cheaper to just build everything as high mounts regardless of engine option. John

Thanks all. To figure out GMC 9500 raised cab or not raised cab I just thought the cabs where the front lower edge of the fender was at the same height as the top of the front tyre was a raised cab and any anything that had the front lower edge of the fender considerably lower than the top of the tyre was a low cab. Having said that I havent ever seen a C90 Chevrolet long nose except for in the Chevrolet Trucks book so I have no idea how the hi or Low cab looks with those or if my front of the fender to tyre height theory would still work......

Hello everyone; I am now the proud owner of a 1968 GMC 9500 Long nose. The good -everything works - the Bad the truck was vandalized by kids with rocks, so no glass left. I am wondering if anyone knows what years that cab was made and if anyone has any leads on where I can find glass?

Mountain------GMC MH 9500 were made from 1967-'76, as the General and Bison cabs were released for the 77 model year . Chevy HD trucks with MH 90 designation were made 1970-76. The short nose Brigadier and the JI-JH 9500s all used the 2 piece glass with a flimsy divider, while 4500- 8000 medium duty models used a 1 piece glass. Windshields are similar looking.................BUT somewhere in the '80s the ads for Brigadier showed more square inches. I salvaged some Brigadier windshields from some Yellow Freight tradeins, and they are about an inch bigger in length and width . This was accomplished by a different rubber molding around the glass, where the glass sits above the opening while the original glass was right inline with the metal opening . The Brigadier was made through about 1988 , continued as a White-GMC badge till Volvo took over and phased the cab out . So, like the Autocar guys have to try to source windshields from Western Star and cut them down on early cabs, I suggest you look at Brigadiers and perhaps you'll have to cut them down .

Regarding old comments on "high cab" and "low cab", there's no difference in the cabs themselves that I've seen . The front frame brackets to support the cab are different , and the rear brackets on the frame are a slightly different style, but mainly the stamped steel supports that fasten the cab to the rear frame brackets are longer. The net result is the top of the cab is 58.5 " above the frame rails on the low cab, and 62.5 " above the frame on high cabs . The hoods are the same on either high or low..............EXCEPT have a deeper skirt on the outside wheel opening area, and on the 90" BBC models the fender extensions blend with either mounting style.

Sure, the 1 piece ws will fit, just have to pull the flimsy piece of strap iron out of the center and get the rrubber molding for the 1 piece .

But you gotta give us more and better pictures of your classic .

You might call or email Dave Schroyer, the 2nd. VP listed in Wheels of Time , as he might have 2 piece WS glass.

Will get better pictures once we can get it out of the barn. Its in the back and the fit is so tight the mirrors had to come off. I will try to contact Dave. Sad part is I was at an auction this past fall and they scrapped 4 cabs and between all of them I would have had the glass. At the time I thought the 9500 was a dream not to be realized. Glad I've got it, now the fun work begins.

FYI-----I found my rough dimensions of the glass. The early ones are 32" wide by 21 1/2 high and the newer ones from a Brigadier are 33" wide at longest point by 22 1/2" high.
